PSAR and MACD Strategy on EUR/USD: A Complete Trend-Following System

Combining Parabolic SAR with MACD creates a powerful dual-confirmation trend system. Learn the exact entry and exit rules for EUR/USD using PSAR trend direction and MACD momentum alignment.

PSAR and MACD Strategy on EUR/USD entry and exit rules

The Parabolic SAR (PSAR) and MACD serve complementary roles: PSAR identifies trend direction and dynamic stop-loss levels; MACD confirms momentum alignment. Together, they create a self-contained trend-following system with mechanical entry and exit rules.

EUR/USD is the ideal pair for this strategy — it’s the most liquid, most technically responsive pair globally, and its trend behavior is well-documented. The system works on other major pairs, but EUR/USD is the benchmark.

Indicator Overview

Parabolic SAR

Appears as dots above or below price candles:

  • Dots below price: Uptrend signal
  • Dots above price: Downtrend signal
  • Dot flip: Signal to close current position and potentially enter the opposite direction

Settings: Acceleration factor 0.02, maximum 0.20 (default).

MACD

Three components: MACD line (fast EMA minus slow EMA), signal line (EMA of MACD line), and histogram (difference between the two).

Settings: 12/26/9 (default).

For this strategy, focus on:

  • MACD line position relative to zero (above = bullish momentum; below = bearish)
  • MACD histogram direction (expanding = momentum building; contracting = fading)

Entry Rules

Long Entry (Both Indicators Must Confirm)

Condition Requirement
PSAR Dots flip from above price to below price (PSAR bullish flip)
MACD line At or above zero at the time of the flip
MACD histogram First green bar (or already positive for 1–2 bars)
Timeframe 4H chart (primary); daily chart alignment preferred
Entry Market order at next 4H candle open after both conditions met

Short Entry (Both Indicators Must Confirm)

Condition Requirement
PSAR Dots flip from below price to above price (PSAR bearish flip)
MACD line At or below zero at the time of the flip
MACD histogram First red bar (or already negative)
Timeframe 4H chart
Entry Market order at next 4H candle open

The MACD alignment filter is critical. PSAR flips frequently in ranging markets — many of these produce false signals. Requiring the MACD line to be on the correct side of zero ensures you’re only entering when broader momentum already supports the direction.

Exit Rules

Stop-Loss

The PSAR itself serves as the stop-loss. At entry:

  • Long: Stop-loss = current PSAR dot value (below price)
  • Short: Stop-loss = current PSAR dot value (above price)

As the PSAR advances with each candle, update the stop-loss to the new PSAR dot value. This creates an automatic trailing stop that tightens as the trend matures.

Minimum stop distance: If the PSAR dot is within 15 pips of the entry (very tight), add 15 pips of buffer. Very tight PSAR stops near entry are often hit by normal intraday noise.

Take-Profit

Method A — PSAR Flip Exit: Close the trade when PSAR flips to the opposite side of price. This captures full trend moves but means giving back some profit as the stop catches up before the flip.

Method B — MACD Divergence Exit: Close when MACD histogram shows clear divergence from the price trend (price making new highs/lows, MACD histogram shrinking). Earlier exit, captures more of the move’s quality section.

Method C — Fixed RR: Use 2× the initial stop-loss distance as the take-profit. Simpler and more consistent, though it may exit before the trend completes.

Most traders using this system favor Method A (PSAR flip) because it keeps the trade in winning positions through extended trends. Method C is useful when you prefer mechanical simplicity.

Trade Management

When the PSAR updates each candle:

  1. Check the new PSAR dot value
  2. Update your stop-loss order to the new PSAR level
  3. Do not move the stop backward (trailing only moves in the direction of profit)

If MACD histogram turns against the trade (before PSAR flips):

  • Close 50% of position (protecting partial profit)
  • Tighten remaining 50% stop to 1Г— ATR from current price
  • Wait for PSAR flip before closing completely

This hybrid management retains exposure to continued trend while reducing risk if momentum fades.

EUR/USD-Specific Notes

Best sessions for this system:

  • London open (07:00–10:00 GMT): Strong directional moves; clean PSAR behavior
  • New York open (13:00–16:00 GMT): High liquidity; MACD signals reliable
  • London/NY overlap (13:00–17:00 GMT): Best of both

Avoid:

  • Asian session (22:00–07:00 GMT): EUR/USD often consolidates; many false PSAR flips
  • 30 minutes before/after major EUR or USD news events

Expected behavior:

  • This system will produce 3–8 tradeable signals per month on EUR/USD 4H
  • Win rate: 45–55%
  • The edge comes from MACD-filtered PSAR flips that catch sustained trends

Historical Example: EUR/USD, Q1 2025

Setup: January 2025. EUR/USD in a moderate downtrend.

  • PSAR flip to bearish (dots above price) on January 15, 4H chart
  • MACD line at -0.0015 (below zero — bearish confirmation)
  • MACD histogram: first red bar confirming momentum
  • Entry: Short at 1.0340

Trade management:

  • Initial stop: PSAR dot at 1.0415 (75 pips above)
  • PSAR trails down as price falls
  • MACD histogram remains negative throughout
  • PSAR flip to bullish: February 3 at 1.0165
  • Exit: Close short at 1.0165

Result: +175 pips over 19 days. 1:2.3 risk-reward ratio.

Risk Management

Parameter Recommendation
Risk per trade 1% of account
Stop-loss Current PSAR dot + 15-pip minimum buffer
Target PSAR flip (Method A) or 2Г— initial risk (Method C)
Pairs EUR/USD primary; GBP/USD, USD/JPY secondary
Max open trades 2 simultaneously
News protocol Reduce size or close 30 minutes before Tier 1 events

Key Takeaways

  • PSAR provides trend direction and dynamic trailing stop; MACD provides momentum confirmation — together they filter the most common PSAR weakness (false flips in ranges)
  • Only take PSAR flips when MACD line is already on the correct side of zero and histogram confirms
  • The PSAR dot is the live stop-loss — update it each candle, never move it backward
  • Three exit options: PSAR flip (captures full trend), MACD divergence (earlier exit), fixed 1:2 RR (mechanical simplicity)
  • On EUR/USD 4H, expect 3–8 signals per month; win rate 45–55%; edge from extended trend capture
  • Avoid Asian session entries; best performance during London and NY sessions
