SMA Crossover and RVI: A Trend Signal With Momentum Confirmation

Combining a Simple Moving Average crossover with the Relative Vigor Index (RVI) creates a system where trend signals are only taken when momentum confirms direction. Learn the setup rules, RVI reading, and exit framework.

Indicators Used: SMARVI

SMA Crossover and RVI momentum confirmation strategy chart

The Simple Moving Average crossover is one of the oldest trend-following signals. Its core weakness: it generates many false crossovers in ranging markets. Adding the Relative Vigor Index (RVI) as a momentum filter reduces false signals by requiring momentum confirmation before any crossover entry is taken.

The Indicators

SMA Crossover (10/30 or 20/50)

A bullish signal occurs when the fast SMA crosses above the slow SMA. A bearish signal occurs when it crosses below.

Recommended period combinations:

Fast SMA Slow SMA Best For
10 30 4H active trading
20 50 Daily swing positions

Relative Vigor Index (RVI)

The RVI measures the momentum of price movement by comparing closing price to the trading range:

RVI = (Close − Open) / (High − Low) — smoothed over 10 periods

Reading the RVI:

  • RVI line above zero: Closes are consistently above opens — bullish momentum
  • RVI line below zero: Closes are consistently below opens — bearish momentum
  • RVI signal line crossover: The RVI line crossing its signal line (similar to MACD) provides timing signals

Settings: 10-period RVI with 4-period signal line (default).

Entry Rules

Long Entry (Bullish SMA Cross + RVI Confirms)

Condition Requirement
SMA crossover Fast SMA crosses above slow SMA on 4H chart
RVI confirmation RVI line is above zero at the time of the SMA crossover
RVI signal RVI line above its signal line (optional additional confirmation)
Entry Long at next 4H candle open
Stop-loss Below the slow SMA at entry + 15 pips
Take-profit 2Г— stop distance, or next significant resistance

Short Entry

Condition Requirement
SMA crossover Fast SMA crosses below slow SMA
RVI confirmation RVI line below zero
Entry Short at next 4H candle open
Stop-loss Above the slow SMA + 15 pips
Take-profit 2Г— stop distance

The Confirmation Logic

Without RVI: A 10/30 SMA bullish crossover that occurs when RVI is below zero means price momentum is still bearish (closes below opens). The SMA crossover may be the leading edge of a move that will quickly reverse.

With RVI: If the 10 SMA crosses above the 30 SMA AND RVI is above zero, both the trend direction (SMA) and momentum character (RVI) agree. The probability of sustained follow-through increases.

Strongest signal: SMA bullish crossover + RVI above zero + RVI line crossing above its signal line simultaneously. All three elements confirming simultaneously is rare but high-probability.

Exit Rules

Primary exit: Opposite SMA crossover (10 SMA crosses back below 30 SMA).

Early exit trigger: If RVI falls below zero while the SMA crossover is still bullish, momentum is deteriorating. Consider closing 50% of the position and tightening the stop.

Limitations

The RVI is less common than RSI or MACD and not available on all platforms (it’s available on MT4, MT5, and TradingView). If your platform doesn’t support RVI, substitute MACD histogram above/below zero as the equivalent momentum filter.

Risk Management

Parameter Value
Risk per trade 1% of account
Stop Below slow SMA + 15 pips
Target 2:1 RR minimum
ADX filter (optional) ADX above 20 for additional trending confirmation

Use the position size calculator.

Key Takeaways

  • The SMA crossover (10/30 or 20/50) generates the trend signal; RVI filters out crossovers where momentum hasn’t confirmed the direction
  • Only take bullish SMA crossovers when RVI is above zero (closes consistently above opens = bullish momentum); only take bearish crossovers when RVI is below zero
  • Strongest signals: SMA crossover + RVI position + RVI crossing its signal line all aligning simultaneously
  • If RVI crosses below zero while in a long trade, reduce position and tighten stop — momentum is deteriorating
  • If RVI is unavailable on your platform, use MACD histogram above/below zero as an equivalent momentum filter

Pair and Session Considerations

The SMA crossover with RVI works best on pairs with clear trending behavior during active sessions:

Best pairs:

  • EUR/USD: Most liquid; 4H SMA crossovers during London/NY overlap produce the cleanest signals
  • GBP/USD: More volatile than EUR/USD; wider stops needed but larger moves available
  • USD/JPY: Responds well to momentum indicators; RVI readings are particularly reliable when BOJ policy divergence is in play

Avoid during:

  • Major news events (NFP, CPI) — price spikes distort SMA positions temporarily
  • Asian session on EUR/USD — low volatility produces false crossovers that reverse in London open

Comparing RVI to Alternative Momentum Filters

If RVI is unavailable on your charting platform (it’s absent from some broker-provided tools), these are equivalent substitutes ranked by quality:

Alternative How to Apply Quality
MACD histogram Above zero = bullish momentum; below = bearish Excellent substitute
RSI (14) Above 50 = bullish momentum; below 50 = bearish Good substitute
CCI (20) Above zero = bullish; below = bearish Adequate

The MACD histogram is the closest equivalent because it also measures closing momentum relative to moving averages. RSI above/below 50 is the simplest and most widely available alternative.

Backtesting Checklist

Before trading this system live, verify these conditions using 3 months of 4H data on your chosen pair:

  1. How many SMA crossovers occurred?
  2. Of those, how many had RVI confirmation (same direction as crossover)?
  3. Of confirmed signals, what percentage reached the 2:1 target before the stop?
  4. What was the average hold time per trade?

If confirmed signals have a win rate below 45%, the RVI threshold may need adjustment. Try requiring RVI to be further from zero (e.g., above 0.02 for longs rather than simply positive) to improve signal quality at the cost of fewer trades.

Key Takeaways Summary

  • SMA crossover (10/30 fast-to-slow) generates the trend signal; RVI must be on the same side of zero to confirm
  • Strongest signal: crossover + RVI above/below zero + RVI crossing its signal line all at once
  • If in a long trade and RVI crosses below zero, reduce size and tighten the stop — momentum is deteriorating
  • Best applied to EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY on the 4H chart during active European/US sessions
  • MACD histogram above/below zero is the best substitute if RVI is unavailable on your platform
